The Pittsburgh Pirates continue to unseal prospects.
The Pittsburgh Pirates have called up catcher Endy Rodriguez, 23, from the disabled list for today’s home game against the Cleveland Indians at PNC Park in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Rodriguez, ranked the No. 3 prospect in the organization by MLB.com, was acquired from the Mets in January 2021 in a three-way trade with the San Diego Padres and New York Mets that sent right-handed starter Joe Musgrove to San Diego.
In 67 games at Triple-A Indianapolis this season, he batted .268 with a .356 on-base percentage, .415 slugging percentage, six home runs and 38 RBIs, earning the big league call-up.
Unlike Henry Davis, who was called up earlier, he will focus on catching. Manager Derek Shelton said he will “handle the majority of the catching duties.” The existing starting catcher, Austin Hedges, will play catcher about twice a week and will be brought in late in games to bolster the defense. Davis will also play catcher on occasion.
It’s not just catcher, though. They’ve already practiced a variety of positions in the minors, including first and second base and left field.

Along with the two, Pittsburgh called up infielder Leover Peguero. Peguero hit .260 with a .333 on-base percentage and .462 slugging percentage in 76 games between Double-A and Triple-A this season.

Shelton said, “We’re seeing a lot of homegrown players spend time with major league teams and build winning teams. “These guys came to the big leagues for different reasons. Some of them came up as injuries, some of them came up because they played well, some of them came up because it was time for them to come up, but it’s very important for them to play together until the team gets back to full strength,” Shelton said of the large number of prospects called up.
“The expectations are the same. It’s to win every game. But there’s going to be different conversations, different teachings, because a player’s development isn’t completely over just because they’re in the big leagues,” he said of the changes that will come with more prospects.
