The mighty Brazil fell in overtime. Israel made history.
Israel defeated Brazil 3-2 in overtime in the quarterfinals of the FIFA U-20 World Cup in San Juan, Argentina, early on Thursday morning. Israel will face the winner of the USA vs. Uruguay match on Monday in the quarterfinals for a spot in the final.
Brazil dropped a 2-3 decision to Italy in the group stage, but cruised to victories over the Dominican Republic (6-0) and Nigeria (2-0) to reach the round of 16. Brazil is the favorite in the Round of 16, coming off a 4-1 win over Tunisia.
Israel, on the other hand, barely made it through the group stage with one win, one draw, and one loss. The Israelis barely made it to the round of 16 with a 2-1 win over Japan in their final match. In the round of 16, Israel also defeated Uzbekistan 1-0 to reach the quarterfinals.
Out of the gate, Israel was relentless. Brazil pushed forward, but goals didn’t come easily. The breakthrough came in the 42nd minute. An Israeli striker was brought down by a rough Brazilian defense. The Israeli coach argued for a penalty kick, but the referee saw it as a legitimate tussle and played on. The first half was scoreless.
Finally, Brazil broke through. In the 11th minute of the second half, Marcos Leonardo broke the deadlock with a cool left-footed mid-range shot. But just four minutes later, Israel responded with an equalizing header from Carlisle. Frustration ensued as Brazil failed to capitalize on their high possession.

In the first 18 minutes of overtime, Turgeman scored the game-winner to make it 3-2. Brazil panicked and made mistake after mistake. Israel missed another penalty, but it didn’t stop them from winning.
In the end, after 120 minutes of extra time, Israel toppled the mighty Brazil. With five titles, Brazil, the second most decorated team in the tournament behind host Argentina (six), was upset by Israel.
